Author Topic: 15 tooth Sprocket?  (Read 1513 times)

I have a 15 tooth front sprocket I bought, and have yet to put on.

Anyone else done so?
And if so, I have couple of questions about it:

Is 1st still gutsy enough off the line?

How much will it lower my RPMs cruising at 65?

And does it cause any chain rubbing in the housing or chainguard; that has to be modified?

Thanks!

6k? Awesome! That's right about perfect I think.

And no chain rubbing anywhere?

Stinkopants....I'm on record as having gone to the 15 tooth front after about a year or two of owning my GV250.  I have a lot of posts out there about the results, but the following link should give you some decent info:

http://www.alternativecruisers.com/index.php?topic=18929.msg241852#msg241852

Ultimately, I ended up with approx 8% taller gearing (which I guess we can figure out mathematically by going from 14tooth to 15tooth, hmm?  laugh )

So I managed to take my overall RPM at 50mph (a somewhat standard cruise for me) from right at 6000RPM to approx 5400RPM.

Was this more economical?  Probably, but hard to tell since I made the change in close conjunction to other work.

Did I ever find that the bike wasn't up to the gearing change?  Nope - overall power delivery was the same as had been there before...but remember, I had the bike rejetted and the exhaust modified to accommodate all of this at pretty much the same time.  I think most people would be hard pressed to notice the difference, other than the fact that I now had a more relaxed cruise - which was my intention all along.

You also need to check out the following thread from about a year ago...this will probably help a lot in deciding how to proceed...

http://www.alternativecruisers.com/index.php?topic=18929.0

Good luck to you, either way..

Just finished putting it on today.  Grin Muuuuch more comfortable now IMO. It's just about perfect I think, 1st is no longer a mostly useless granny gear, 2nd is no longer just an acceleration gear, I can now cruise in the 25mph around town in 2nd or 3rd. 4th is now my comfortable 40mph cruise gear instead of 5th (seriously, you should never see 5th gear on the back roads IMO) and 4th is also now more useful as a passing gear getting on the freeway. And 5th is just an all around more comfortable cruising down the highway.

Only thing is right now I'm having a brain fart, and am worried I put the sprocket on backwards.....but.... I could have sworn the flush side on the inside, and lip side facing out was correct....anyone confirm thats how it was supposed to be?

Hey Stinko, where did you buy the sprocket? I assume they must not be unique to Hyosung, correct?

Does the original 116 link chain work just fine with the new sprocket?

http://www.whygostock.com/hyosung-gt250r-front-sprocket-counter-sprocket-gv250/

Where I got it from. And so far so good, some more chain noise, but I think that's mostly due to the sprocket being new and not broken in..... I hope.  Tongue.   Using the stock chain, that's honestly one of the nice things about going for the front sprocket, it doesn't do much to the chain length.

if you're getting chain noise you might want to check your sprocket alignment, as you may have that front sprocket on backward.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of it first, but I just checked the wear patterns on the old sprocket and it shows the raised portion was facing out, so I should be okay... At least I hope so. Undecided
