Overall I think this is a cool little scooter at half the price. I think electric motorcycles are a great idea and very possible.

Folks have been working on electric powered vehicles for an awfully long time and at one point electricity was the favoured form of propulsion. I found this timeline fascinating. What is amazing to me is the fact that even after over 100 years of research and development , batteries still are the major stumbling block to truly useful (IMO anyway) electric powered vehicles.

The real problem is that it's just too expensive to use an extension cord long enough that you don't need the battery. Tongue

I seriously wonder though, with something like a 50cc or 125cc engine, some capacitors and batteries, how hard would it be to have a steady-state generator so that you could have a decent range?

If the goal is to reduce emissions in cities, the electric scooter, car or motorcycle can get you closer to that.  But the pollution caused is moved to the generating and manufacturing facilities, which could possibly be located in areas far enough from these the metro areas to help reduce pollution.  These plants would also have to use the best emission control technology available.  All of this raises costs.  Our government seems to not look at costs to final user, and the total overall impact of many of its regulations.  The rule of unintended consequences happens all to often from these regulations.
Electric vehicles can reduce emissions, but the cost is high, and for many users it is not practical and cost effective.

That's the basis of the Chevy Volt except it uses a far bigger motor to charge the batteries once they are depleted.

I think you have hit the likely solution for at least the near-term, I fear hybrid is about the only way to combine realistic range, low fuel consumption, and still get reasonable performance with currently available technologies.

Chevy is already doing that, but is not calling itself a hybrid with the Volt. The gas engine supposedly does not drive the wheels as regular hybrids do but uses the gas engine to maintain the battery charge. At least that is what they claim.

...and why not - railways have been using the approach for decades with diesel-electric locomotives (admittedly with something bigger than 100cc's but then they shift around a heck of a lot more tonnage too  Grin )

The problem with a hybrid motorcycle to this point I suspect is the weight issue. by the time you add a 100CC engine and fuel tank on top of the batteries etc you've got an overweight, likely poorly handling bike. Eventually the technology will catch up and solve these problems, and it is certainly nice to see BMW experimenting.

hey, I like this bike. It looks good to me. Wish the price were more reasonable, but I'd be interested in one if I could find one. I'm really not concerned abuot the "green" abilities of the bike as much as I just like it. It seems kinda cool to have a decent powered bike that doesn't even use gas, but that's just me. I hope they take this from concept to the showroom!!!
