Why are they there?
I unscrewed the bar end weights on my AJS Regal Raptor DD250E-9B and they are really heavy, what's the reason for them being so heavy? Some sort of "damping" ?

They dampen vibration in the handle bars.

They are not critical. We carry both styles in stock also. Let us know any parts you require.

If you replace with custom grips you will have to remove them and the threaded section to install.
We have these also in 3 styles: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DIAMOND-HANDLE-BAR-GRIPS-7-8-Bars-Johnny-Pag-Hunter-Spyder-Bobber-Daytona-/320991610432?pt=AU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4abc974640
We also stock the matching footpegs & Brake / Gear toe levers.
Hope this helps.

dpetrick:

dingdingdindig!!! we have a winner! Yes, heavy bar-end weights are used to elp dampen the vibration felt at the hands from the engine.

pagparts:

agreed, they are not critical to the bike being able to run;  however, on a bike that vibrates significantly (like our little paralel twin engines do) a good set of bar end weights will make riding a lot more comfortable. too much vibration a tt eh bars will end up making your hands numb on a longer ride,

BTW those conical end weights look prety sharp! are they heavier than the stock ones?

i believe the term english vibration come to mind hence the reason for bar end weights on parallel engines now a day. If you want to feel what it would be like to ride without them without taking yours off find someone with a old triumph or old honda cm or cb they should be able to tell you i know on my cm400a i have no bar ends and i drive 45 mins to work and by the time i get there my hands are almost numb
