I have been looking in to a way to improve the Pag ignition  system for a while now. Average secondary  volage (volts actually getting to the spark plug)  on these engines is between 4 and 5 thousand volts. Today i finally got in some coil on plug units that i have been waiting for over a week. Using these insted of the factory coils i have been able to raise the firing volage up to 10 to 13 thousand volts, so far i am pleased with the results.
Rode the test bike 70 miles after i got off work noticed a much smother idle and better performance in the midrange on the engine. It is too earlyer yet to figure out fuel milage as of yet but i believe i will have to raise the needles in the cabs one notch. I believe it is running a tough lean on a steady cruise, will know more tomorrow on this after i pull the plugs. here are some pictures of the units installed on the test bike. I was in a hurry to get this running so the wires are help out the way with electtape.

Spark plug covers had to be left off to use these new units

I love the upgrades you keep coming up with.  Will be very curious to see how most of these will work on the new bikes, knowing that some are carb specific so not relevant to the new bikes.

I do have a question...with the plug covers off, would there be a potential issue with it being exposed to the elements if caught in the rain?

Willride,

The upgrades I have been testing will more than likely not work on the 2012 and newer fuel injection bikes due to the differences in the engines.

Even though I have not had a hand in importing the 2011 and older bikes, I am committed to parts support for them for as long as Regal Raptor will provide me with the parts, and I am constantly working on alternate sources for those parts I can no longer get from them

I am also trying to see how far we can "evolve" this little engine and still keep it affordable to the customers. The sheer number of email requests I get on a daily basis asking about performance upgrades shows it is an area that has potential for growtn.

Ivor, were your voltage readings taken with Iridiums or standard plugs, or does it make any difference which?

My first thought when I saw your pics was 'will they fit under the spark plug covers?' but reading further I see they won't. That is a shame, because the chrome covers do set off the engine nicely and without them IMHU it all looks a bit unfinished.

Again, IMO, I don't think there would be a problem with rain, as long as the coils are watertight, because the 125cc as sold in Europe doesn't have covers, and it doesn't get much wetter than in the UK.

Cheers, Rog

readings were taken with standard NGK plugs. Weather will not be an issue as these coils are made to be bolted to the top of the valve covers. I do still have to figure out a way to proply secure them and more real world testing is needed. Sunday I plan on putting a nother 200 miles on the Syder so that will give me some idea of real milage difference.

The ride went well. It was cut a little short because of heavy rain near the end of the ride. All in all we rode about 160 miles. Cop units performed well even in heavy rain. We did not fallow the same route that we did last week so it makes it difficult to get a real mileage count. I did get better milage this time but i be live it had more to do with driving conditions then just the coils them self. More testing is needed to be sure. It does appear to run better then it ever has.
