Got sort of a silly question for you guys... Is there any way to increase the resistance to adjustment on the stock mirrors? One of my mirrors is too loose and moves too easily - every time I put the cover on and off, the mirror winds up completely out of position. I didn't see any obvious screw or anything around the ball and socket joint, but I thought you guys might know.

A preliminary search of the forum yielded the somewhat helpful suggesting of filling that sucker with superglue? http://www.alternativecruisers.com/index.php?topic=9940.0

Thanks!

Turn the mirror around in circles until you get it in the position you want, but leave enough "slack" so that when you tighten the bolt/sleeve attached to the mirror it has enough bite to hold the mirror tightly in place.

You could also try blue locktite on the threads, which will help.

If it is the loose ball joint thing, what i did is put a small tire wire around the ball joint.. it worked.

Sorry Lance, I should've been more clear. It's not the arm on which the mirror rests that's loose, but the ball and socket joint joint where the mirror itself pivots. If we are talking about the same joint, I'm not sure where there's threads!

iron cross, how did you wrap it? just sort of an "X" across the ball & socket? or something like a loop just around where the ball meets the socket?

Thanks guys!

Thanks RonnieTheBear, my apologies - I was thinking it was where the mirror itself screws into the handlebars.  Iron cross's suggestion sounds good.  I also wonder if you could "pop" the mirror out of the socket whether you could wrap some duct tape around the ball and then pop it back in?

Gotcha.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Maybe I'll start by messing around with the wire, and if that doesn't do the trick, I'll probably work up the nerve to pop the ball out of the socket...just hope I can get it back together again!

Mirrors arent too expensive...It may be best to put fully adjustable custom mirrors on your bike to give it that personal touch.

One of my mirrors hit something and became very loose - at first I tried smearing different glues and silicone on the ball joint surface to try and get the mirror to hold it's position - didn't work. I did fix it, but I can only vaguely remember how Embarrassed. It was possible to separate the plastic chrome backing from the glass bit of the mirror, so I was able to access a screw or nut (sorry I just can't remember Undecided) on the inside to tighten up the ball joint. I think you need to find the split in the seal around the mirror glass, and carefully lever with a thin screwdriver or knife.

just make a loop around it, the tie wire tightens around the ball so it tightens the joint. i used a 3inch long black-colored tie wire to blend in with the color of the joint.
