Ride Hard or Stay Home

brj311:  That is wonderful that the bike is performing so well for you and that you are enjoying it.  I agree, it is such a blast!

I must say I got a little disappointed yesterday....when I rode, the top speed I could get it up to was 67-68mph but with no throttle left (and going downhill Sad).  I tried a few more times, all the same.  Previously, I could go 67mph on a level surface or even slight incline with plenty of throttle left.  So hub and I were thinking that I should be able to get up to 70-75mph full throttle.  I weigh around 110lbs, 5'2" tall.  Although I don't plan on riding for extended periods of time on the freeway, I do want to be able to get out of people's way as we live right on a highway (60mph speed limit but people go faster) that is the only way in and out of town.

Hub is going to see if he can find anything that has changed from before or is wrong with my bike this weekend.  Also, he found this older thread last night and is going to try the suggestion about the pilot screw.

Hope everyone is having a nice day!

Always make sure that you are running preminm fuel and that your tires are properly aired up.Small differences on a small cc bike can make a huge difference.

I though It would be good to resurrect this thread rather than start a new one.  But as regards my V5's top speed:  Ive been hitting speeds between 70-75 @ 90% throttle downhill on my V5.  Disappointingly though, when I checked it against a gps the speedometer has been reading 10+mph fast,  and the extra 10% throttle has no effect.  In most traffic situations im struggling to hit 55. Should I adjust the jetting, or swap the cdi box, or is everyone's speed reports inflated because of the speedometer?

These bikes are so different in some respects. My GPS verified my speedo to be dead accurate so I'm sure many are reporting proper readings.

I know this is an old thread, but adjusting the pilot screw will have no affect on the top end speed. Pilot screws alter idle jetting. If you want to alter your jetting and thing the top end if the problem, then you're looking at a main jet issue.

There are essentially 3 jetting levels. Pilot, Needle, and main. The pilot affects the low-end. (from the closed throttle to the 1/4 position.) The needle affects the mid range (from 1/4 to 3/4 throttle) and the main jet affects the top end (from 3/4 to full throttle.) The main jet will also add a little bit more flow to all other areas. But when jetting, you have to get the main jet set first before you go messing with anything else.

Make sure all other things in are within spec before you make any drastic changes. Having 10% throttle left doesn't really mean much if your throttle cable is out of whack. Try giving that ad adjustment to within spec and see if that changes anything.

How many miles are on your belt and do you have air in the tires?
Make sure your air box isn't full of blow-by and that your filter element is good and clean.

Thanks for the suggestions I will check this out.  The bike just turned 1000 so I am guessing it has just broken in.

Update:  I'm sure you all have been enjoying how stupid hot its been this last week.  I was experiencing near overheating temps  on my V5, so I opened it up today to check the coolant.  I found the air hose to the carb was all but disconnected.  So I have been sucking in hot engine air this entire time.  Problem fixed and I do believe the fresh air is giving me a new boost of power.  I even shot down the highway for an exit and had relatively no problem  keeping up with traffic.
