So just to be clear, I have nothing against Harley-Davidson motorcycles, but their marketing techniques seem rather obvious, and rather funny.

For example, I'm signed up to get their periodical emails. The subject line of the one just received is "Stereotypes Are Made To Be Broken", and this is the content of the message (see attachment). Because nothing breaks the Harley stereotype for me like seeing a(n ambiguous girl or) guy in a half helmet and flanel, doing a burn out on a Harley with straight pipes.

Was just enjoying that email myself. Its humorous to me but it sure does seem to work for them.

Most non-riders have the idea that motorcyclists are a certain kind of person (and usually the stereotype is not favorable) - I think we've all probably encountered that.  What I like about HD's whole campaign is that it's trying to show that motorcyclists come from the ranks of a very diverse group of people - soccer mom's and dad's, business people, trades people, artists, etc.  It's great marketing because it helps potential buyers who might not consider a Harley because of the perceived stereotype want to look at HD's.

To me, it's like Honda's very effective marketing campaign back in the 60's "You meet the nicest people on a Honda."

I"ve been amused by HD advertising for some time. It usually boils down to say buy a Harley to be unique, like everyone else. They make a great machine to be sure, but their advertising in my opinion misses the mark.

agreed, and it seems to be very effective to both those who buy-in to the Harley image, and to the non-riders who are interested, but I think it really misses with those people who already ride and are not interested in the image.

My personal opinion is that the sound of a Harley cannot be beat.  You get one that is running good with the right pipes on it and it can sound like a small block V8.  That is hard to ignore when a sweet running Harley is going down the road.

That is what I think most Harley lovers like the best and what Harley continues to supply and protect.

Some people are just irony-impaired.   Grin

Reminds me a bit of the old Honda scooter commercial with DEVO.  They are dressed identically, sitting on identical scooters while they say (in unison) "choose the scooter that best expresses your individuality".

How on earth the execs making the call didn't see the rather obvious, deliberate slam is beyond me.
