Hi guys,

I recently came home from a ride and as I turned into my street the tacho fluctuated a bit then stopped working.  'Easy fix' I thought.  I ordered and swapped the whole instrument panel only to find that the tacho still wasn't working.  I am now thinking it is a sensor problem.  Now, I have a few issues here -

a) where is the senosr

b) is it easy to swap

c) Where can I find a replacement sensor

Noting that I am fairly novice at fixing motorbikes am I better off just going to a mechanic to sort it out?

Thanks for the help.

Naaa....you basically have a couple wires going to the coil and power , so check to see if your wires are connected.
follow the wires and get a service manual with pictures and you should be fine, if not, blame Obama. Roll Eyes

Do you happen to know what colour the wire is for the tacho?  I see in the GT250 manual it is a BY but on the GT250r instrument panel I cannot find a BY wire

As Chargerdog said, the "sensor" is just a wire to the negative low tension side of one of the coils - the tacho counts the number of pulses that hit this side of the coil. The tacho also has a +12V connection and a ground - that's it. If a replacement tacho still doesn't work then there must be a break/bad connection in one of these wires.

A cheap multimeter on DC volts range will tell you if you have 12V and a ground connection at the tacho, the 3rd connection is the one to coil and again on resistance setting the meter will tell you if there is continuity from the tacho to the coil. This should be all you need to identify where the problem is.

Cheers Icedog.

I don't have a multimeter on me right now, I will check that tomorrow.  Are you sure the connections are only positive and negative?  The GT250 workshop manual says there is a posative, negative and signal wire.  This isn't the same type of instrument panel as the 250r so the wiring is probably different but it is what I used as a reference.  I cannot find any other wiring diagrams or workshop manuals for the 250r.

The tacho is getting power (all the lights are on, etc) so it must be a signal issue.  Does the wire go directly to the coil or via the CDI to the coil?

right on Icedog,
one wire -power
one wire- ground
one wire- signal-  connected direct to the coil
one wire -coil( maybe)
should be it
signal wire might be connected to rear coil ?
