We were the unappreciative recipients of a minor hack last night that added a malware link to several files. I have cleaned them all, as far as I'm aware, but be on the watch and please inform me if you receive any alerts from your Anti-Virus in regards to alternativecruisers.com.

I apologize for any inconvenience.

Regards
Bill

A bunch of our sites got hit by a similar attack over the past week.  I've wasted way too much time fixing sites because of these hacker @$$holes.   Angry

And yeah, just one more reason on the loooong list of why I use FireFox to browse the web (with AdBlock and NoScript, of course)   Cool

Firefox didn't help any in this instance, fortunately the particular virus/worm has been around for a while and the virus scanner had no trouble catching it.

My anti-virus caught it and wouldn't let me gain access to the site.  Who do we know that would write us a nasty note like that?  A disgruntled former ACDer?  Don't think "Tracy" has the IQ, so I am at a loss.  Seems we were singled out to me.  But, then, I'm paranoid anyway.

Most of the time it's not anyone in particular.  When we get hit, it's usually a bot somewhere that just pounds the FTP connection until they guess the password.  Then the bot itself logs in and inserts some malicious code.  What I don't really get is why people do this in the first place.  Is it just to show off as a hacker, or are they really making money through some convoluted system?

And tracking the IP most likely won't yield anything.  When 8 of our sites got hit at once, it was from 8 different IP blocks, so these jerks are pretty thorough.   Tongue

And show up at their house with a little "malware" of our own.

yeah, depending on the type of virus it either comes from an infected system in which case the owner isn't really responsible (although it could be argued they are irresponsible), or it comes via staging hosts which hide the true addresses (a form of proxy). Given that this particular bit of malware was a worm it tends to suggest some human assistance in the infection vector.
